Make sure you have packed everything you need
Before you set off on any HGV jobs, you should ensure you have packed all the essential items you might need throughout your journey. Luckily for you, we’ve prepared a helpful checklist of what to bring:
- De-icer and ice scraper
- Jump leads
- A flashlight
- A high-visibility jacket
- Extra warm clothes – don’t forget socks!
- Food and water
Check you are prepared for the weather
Before any long journey, make sure you keep up to date with the latest weather information so you can be aware of any changing conditions. If you are planning on travelling further afield, it is worth taking the time to review the conditions not just where you start or end the journey, but anywhere you pass through on your route.
After you’ve checked out your journey, it’s essential that you check your HGV to ensure everything is working correctly. Make sure you check your tyres, battery, windscreen wipers, fluid levels, lights and defrosters and fix any issues before starting your journey.
Take care driving on the road
According to Insure the Box, drivers are 20% more likely to be in a car accident during the winter months. Therefore, it’s important that you stay slow and steady on the roads, particularly during poor weather conditions.
Sharp, sudden movements can cause you to lose control, so make sure you keep a consistent speed and go easy on the brakes. It’s also important you hold the correct stopping distance between you and any vehicles in front of you.
During periods of snow and ice, allow as much as ten times the normal stopping distance.
Take a break when you need to
Last year, the Independent found that 97% of people feel tired and sluggish over the winter months, so it’s important you get enough rest and sleep when necessary.
Not only this, but harsh weather conditions can make it difficult for you to progress with your journey. At this stage, it’s important to find a safe space to stop to wait for visibility to improve.
