Plan your journeys
Map out your route and timings in advance. Getting to grips with your journey before you get on the road has multiple benefits. Not only will it give you peace of mind, but it also provides the opportunity to enhance your quality of life on the road, enabling you to choose safe places to stop, rest, eat and sleep.
When route planning, remember to identify alternative routes to take if traffic is slow or roadworks and closures are in place. You should also look for safe places to stop if the weather turns or you need to take an unexpected break. Planning your timings also helps to avoid the busiest times of day on those traffic-heavy routes.
Check the weather forecast
The weather can have a considerable impact on journey times and travel plans. If you are travelling further afield, don’t forget to check the forecast throughout the journey to your destination.
Checking the weather also serves as a reminder to put any safety needs into place. For example, take a pair of sunglasses to avoid the glare of the sun, or a woolly hat and insulated boots for driving in snow and extremely low temperatures.
Pack your essentials
When setting out on your journey, HGV drivers should always make sure they have all the essential items they might need on the way. Some of the key items our drivers take on HGV jobs include:
- Extra clothing for weather changes and overnight stays
- Food and water
- A torch for night-time stops or safety checks
- A book, newspaper, cards or game
- Essential toiletries
- Route planner and map for last-minute changes

Before you set out on any journey, complete a full safety check of your vehicle, including
- Checking all fluid levels, including oil, brake fluid, defrosters, and windscreen solution
- Brakes
- Tyres including looking at the tread and tyre pressure
- Battery

There are now several established HGV driver communities, in which HGV Class 1 and HGV Class 2 drivers can share safety and traffic information, safe places to stop, tips and talks about other HGV-related topics. It’s a fantastic opportunity to network with other drivers.

Remain mindful of COVID
It is always useful to keep up to date with the latest guidance on COVID restrictions. This is especially the case when travelling to or through Wales, Scotland, Ireland and Europe, as you can expect restrictions to be different to your local area.
Always take a supply of masks and carry hand sanitiser with you. Be mindful that public toilets are not always open and prepare for food outlets to be closed or take out only. Keep to the 2-metre rule and, most importantly, take care of your own health and wellbeing!
