During the coronavirus pandemic, it has become increasingly clear the importance of HGV drivers in society. Each day, they are at risk of contracting the virus while they play a vital role in delivering essential goods such as food and medicine to those in need. With this in mind, this article outlines some top tips for HGV drivers to ensure they remain safe at work.

Get enough rest

With increasing demand for essential goods, the Department for Transport has relaxed regulations for HGV drivers by extending driving limits and reducing daily rest requirements. The Department for Transport have made it clear, however, that driver safety must not be compromised, and that HGV drivers should not be expected to drive whilst tired.

Sleep is one of the most important components of health and wellbeing. As a HGV driver, you will often work long shifts and drive for many hours, and so it is crucial that you get enough sleep and take regular breaks. After all, not getting enough sleep affects your ability to perform physical and mental tasks.

Follow hygiene guidelines

The UK Government has released a number of guidelines in order to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Some of these guidelines are more difficult to follow on the road, however there are a number of ways you can reduce the spread of COVID:

Carry anti-bacterial cleaning wipes

At both the start and end of your shift, use anti-bacterial cleaning wipes to clean all surfaces inside your truck. This includes the steering wheel, gearstick, dashboard and handles.

Wash your hands as often as possible

It’s important that when you stop at service stations or distribution centres around the UK, you take the time to wash your hands for at least 20 seconds. While on the road, carry anti-bacterial gel to use when you don’t have access to soap and water.

Use disposable gloves

When refuelling or handling goods, wear disposable gloves. These should be removed following government guidance and thrown away after use. You may also want to take your own pen to sign documentation and avoid cross contamination.

Follow social distancing guidelines

When leaving your truck, make sure you keep a distance from customers and clients. You should also carry a mask with you to wear when distancing is not possible or in locations it is necessary to wear one by law.

Self-isolate where necessary

If you begin showing symptoms that align with those of the coronavirus, it’s important that you stay at home and self-isolate for at least a week. If you are living with someone showing symptoms, you must self-isolate for at least fourteen days.
