The UK’s HGV Driver Shortage: A Growing Crisis

The UK’s HGV Driver Shortage: A Growing Crisis

The HGV driver shortage is a long-running issue that has worsened over the past two years. Brexit, the pandemic, and tax changes have exacerbated the problem, leaving the industry short of drivers. The impact? Widespread disruption, empty shelves, and rising prices. The industry needs to recruit around 200,000 drivers over the next five years.

Why is there a shortage of HGV Drivers?
One major factor is the ageing workforce, only 1.6% of HGV drivers are under 24 , while the average age is 55. Many are now retiring, and the industry is struggling to attract new talent. Females make up only 2% of drivers.

How did we get here?
The crisis escalated in 2021 due to a perfect storm of factors:

COVID-19 – older drivers left the profession while demand for online shopping surged
Brexit – a mass exodus of European truckers worsened the shortfall
Visa restrictions – the Government issued 5,000 temporary worker visas, but it was not a long-term strategy
Pay increases – HGV wages rose 27%, yet recruitment still lags

This led to fuel shortages, supermarket panic buying, and supply chain chaos. Even major brands struggled to keep up.
